"How do I build a second dome" is one of the most asked BioEden questions, and it was one of the earliest threads on the official Steam discussion board during the demo. The frustration is understandable: the tutorial hands you a dome and then never explains that the next one is a project rather than a purchase.
Why the second dome feels blocked
There are four separate things that can stop you, and the game does not always distinguish between them clearly:
| What is blocking you | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | The dome shows in the build menu but greyed with a cost you cannot afford | Salvage more debris; recycle anything speculative |
| Research | The dome option is not offered at all | Progress the Biome Knowledge Tree |
| Power or water headroom | It places but immediately shows as unsupplied | Add a solar pylon and a distributor *before* the dome, not after |
| Space | No valid placement highlight on the tiles you want | Survey further out; a dome needs a contiguous footprint |
In the demo specifically, the answer for most players was the first and third: the second dome is genuinely expensive relative to what the tutorial leaves you holding, and the infrastructure to support it has to exist before it will function.
The order that actually works
- Clear the debris you skipped. Most players finish the tutorial with several unsalvaged sites still on the map. That is your dome budget sitting on the floor.
- Recycle anything speculative. The refund is full. A pylon you placed in a bad spot is not a sunk cost, it is stored materials.
- Extend power first. Place the solar capacity for the second dome before the dome exists. A dome that comes online into an already-saturated grid will brown out everything you already built.
- Extend water second. Same logic. Climate devices inside the new dome are a continuous water draw, not a one-off.
- Check cable and pipe range. This is the step people skip. Range is limited, and a second dome placed just past the reach of your existing network needs its own local power and water source, which roughly doubles the real cost.
- Then place the dome. Only now.
- Put an Incubator inside before anything else. An empty dome does nothing for you.
Should the second dome be the same biome?
This is the more interesting question, and the answer is genuinely "it depends".
Same biome (another Jungle) is cheaper in every sense. You already own the research, you already know the climate band, you already have the plants, and your existing species can move in. If your goal is to get Landowl, Ributs, Fimble and Slink all to Residency quickly, a second Jungle dome does that with almost no new learning.
A different biome costs more and unlocks more. A new biome means a new Bestiary tab, a new branch of the Biome Knowledge Tree, and access to Collective Requests that specify that biome. Because knowledge is tracked per biome and requests can ask for something like "raise Knowledge of Prairie to Level 6", a planet where you have never built a Prairie dome simply cannot complete a large class of requests.
The practical recommendation: make dome two the same biome if you are still shaky on climate control, and a different biome if your first dome is stable and you want the campaign to open up. There is no wrong answer, only a faster and a broader one.
Placement advice for dome two
- Read the regional pollution figure first. The globe widget shows it. Placing a dome in a 75% region is a
commitment to a cleanup project as well as a dome.
- Keep it inside network range. The difference between a dome just inside and just outside cable range is the
difference between one extra pylon and an entire second power island.
- Leave room around it. You will want climate devices, and outside the dome you will want the infrastructure to
feed them.
- Do not build over debris. Still true, still the most common regret.
After the dome is up
A new dome is an empty shell. The sequence inside it is climate, then plants, then furniture:
- Set temperature and humidity into the band of whichever species you plan to move in.
- Place the required plants. Landowl needs two Ferns; other species have their own lists in the Bestiary.
- Add decoration and a watering hole so residents will actually stay, since
Residency checks more than climate.
- Only then incubate.
Getting this order backwards — incubating into a dome whose climate is not yet set — is the other common source of "my animal will not settle" reports.
If the dome option is still not appearing
If you have materials, power headroom, water headroom and space, and the second dome genuinely is not offered, the remaining explanation is research. Open the Biome Knowledge Tree and check whether dome capacity or a related unlock is sitting behind a level you have not reached. Research in BioEden is tracked per biome, so progress in Jungle does not necessarily unlock anything in Prairie.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not build a second dome in BioEden?
Most often materials, or power and water headroom. Salvage remaining debris, recycle anything speculative, and add generation and distribution capacity before you place the dome rather than after.
Should my second BioEden dome be the same biome?
Same biome is cheaper and faster; a new biome unlocks a new Bestiary tab, a new Knowledge Tree branch and a wider range of Collective Requests. Pick same-biome if climate control is still difficult for you.
How many domes can you build in BioEden?
No hard cap has been published. Practical limits come from power, water and materials rather than a fixed number.

BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The gameplay systems described on this page were checked against official BioEden screenshots released by Focus Entertainment, and against the systems described on the official Steam store page. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy.
