DNA fragments are the hard currency of BioEden. Materials are recoverable — recycle a building and you get them back. DNA is not. Once you spend it on a species, that decision is made.

Where DNA fragments come from
DNA accumulates from three activities:
- Surveying and salvaging. The same exploration loop that feeds your material economy also turns up genetic
material. This is the main early source.
- Research. Progressing the Biome Knowledge Tree yields DNA alongside its other
unlocks.
- Collective Requests. Completing guild missions contributes to progression broadly, including species access.
There is no DNA factory. You cannot build your way to more of it the way you can with materials, which is exactly why the spending decision matters.
The confirmed Jungle price list
Transcribed directly from an official Bestiary screenshot:
| Species | DNA cost | Card state |
|---|---|---|
| Landowl | Pre-unlocked | Blue header — available immediately |
| Ributs | Pre-unlocked | Blue header — available immediately |
| Fimble | 3 | Green header — buy with DNA |
| Slink | 5 | Green header — buy with DNA |
| Basker | 7 | Green header — buy with DNA |
| Mirra | 10 | Green header — buy with DNA |
| Thudder | 20 | Grey header — additionally gated |
What the card colours mean
This is the single most useful thing to learn about the Bestiary, and the game does not explain it:
- Blue header — already unlocked. Incubate it now, at no DNA cost.
- Green header with a number — purchasable. The number is the exact DNA price.
- Grey header — locked behind something other than DNA, even though a price is displayed. Thudder shows
20 DNA and a grey header simultaneously, which is why players who carefully save 20 fragments are confused when the unlock still will not fire. The gate is almost certainly research progress.
If you take one thing from this page: do not save 20 DNA for Thudder early. You will hit the gate, not the price.
How to spend DNA well
- Do not spend any at first. Landowl and Ributs are free. Get a dome working with them before you buy anything.
- Buy cheap and buy breadth. Fimble (3) and Slink (5) together cost 8 — less than Mirra alone at 10 — and give you two more species to work with.
- Match purchases to a dome that already exists. A species you cannot house is DNA sitting idle. Build the climate first, buy second.
- Check the header colour before saving up. A grey card cannot be bought at any price.
- Leave the expensive species until your climate control is good. A 10 or 20 DNA species in a poorly tuned dome will sit at Biome stage forever and you cannot get the DNA back.
The requirement panel
Selecting any Bestiary card opens a panel with the species' requirements, split across three tabs: Biome, Residency and Mating. Landowl's Biome tab, from the official screenshot, reads:
- Temperature — 20° to 45°
- Humidity — 55% to 90%
- Animal and Plant Required — Fern ×2
Note the label: *Animal and Plant Required*. It covers both flora and, for carnivores, presumably prey or feeding provision. That is the closest the Bestiary comes to telling you about diet, which is why carnivores vs herbivores needs its own page.
Reading the flavour text
Each species card carries a short description. Landowl's reads: *"Agile creatures whose physiology suggest they spend much time in the canopy."* These are not purely decorative — "much time in the canopy" is a hint about what kind of vegetation the species wants, and reading them is a cheap way to guess at requirements before you commit DNA.
Common DNA mistakes
- Buying a species before building its dome. Common, and it stalls your progress while the DNA sits unused.
- Saving for Thudder. The grey card gate makes this a wasted savings plan early on.
- Buying one expensive species instead of three cheap ones. Progression in BioEden comes from having multiple
species moving through Biome, Residency and Mating simultaneously, not from owning the rarest card.
- Forgetting the Bestiary has five biome tabs. If your planet has a Prairie region you have been ignoring,
there is a whole tab of species you have not looked at.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get DNA in BioEden?
From surveying and salvaging the world, from research in the Biome Knowledge Tree, and from Collective Requests. There is no building that produces DNA.
How much DNA does each BioEden animal cost?
In the Jungle tab: Fimble 3, Slink 5, Basker 7, Mirra 10, Thudder 20. Landowl and Ributs are pre-unlocked. Other biome rosters have not been published.
Why can't I unlock Thudder in BioEden?
Thudder's Bestiary card has a grey header, meaning it is gated behind something other than DNA — normally research progress — even though a 20 DNA price is displayed.
Can you refund DNA in BioEden?
No. Unlike materials, which are fully refunded when you recycle a building, DNA spent on a species is spent.
How this BioEden page was verified
BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The species names, DNA costs and climate values on this page were transcribed directly from an official BioEden Bestiary screenshot; any value not legible in official material is marked as unconfirmed rather than estimated. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy.
