BioEden Pollution & Impact Level

Quick answer

BioEden tracks two numbers: regional pollution, shown as a percentage on the HUD globe, and planet-wide Impact Level. Let Impact climb and the Collective applies Active Regulations and raises a Crisis Alert, with Charles telling you you are doing more harm than good. It is reversible, but slow — audit industry first, since one Orb Factory carries a +35 pollution effect.

BioEden is marketed as a game you cannot lose, and that is true in the narrow sense: there is no game over screen. It is not true in the sense most players assume. The planet keeps score, and past a threshold the Collective intervenes.

Official screenshots show pollution ranging from 8.1% in a healthy Jungle to 95% in a Purple Crystal Prairie and 75% in a Burnt Tundra. One Collective Request in official material asks the player to “reduce the Impact Level to 19%”, which tells you both that Impact is expressed as a percentage and that the game considers sub-20% a target worth setting.

Active Regulations and the Crisis Alert

This is the part of BioEden nobody warns you about. When your Impact Level climbs too high, the Collective applies Active Regulations — visible as a stack of notices in the top right of the screen — and Charles appears with the line: *"You're currently doing more harm than good to the planet, so we've been forced to intervene."* Above a further threshold, a red Crisis Alert joins them.

Regulations restrict what you are allowed to do. They are not a loss condition and they are reversible, but digging out of a heavily regulated state takes real time, and the restrictions bite precisely when you most want the freedom to build your way out. This is BioEden's difficulty curve, and it is the reason players who expected a completely frictionless game are sometimes caught off guard.

What actually raises pollution

  • Industry buildings. The Orb Factory is the clearest case: a +35 pollution effect shown directly in its

tooltip, plus 50 power consumed and 1500 + 1000 materials to build. A Collective Request asking you to build four of them is asking you to accept a +140 pollution commitment.

  • Density. Every addition to the planet consumes resources, draws energy and nudges pollution upward. Volume

matters, not just building type.

  • Inherited damage. Some regions start dirty. A Burnt Tundra at 75% was not your fault, but it is your problem

once you build there.

How to bring pollution and Impact down

  1. Audit your industry first. Open the tooltip on every industrial building and read the Effects line. One Orb Factory too many is worth more than a dozen small optimisations.
  2. Recycle what you are not using. The refund is full. A building that is idle is still a liability if it has an ongoing effect.
  3. Purify water and reclaim ruins. Restoration is an active mechanic, not just scenery. Cleaning terrain and purifying lakes is how regional pollution comes down.
  4. Spread out rather than stacking. Concentrating industry in one region drives that region's percentage to extremes, and it is the regional number that affects the animals there.
  5. Use the guild perks you have. Umbra unlocks perks named Terrain Cleaner and Eco Device at level 5; their exact effects are not published, but the naming points at cleanup and efficiency.
  6. Do not accept every Collective Request. “Build 4 Orb Factory” is a legitimate choice, not an obligation. There is usually an alternative from another guild.

Reading the globe widget

The globe in the top centre of the HUD is the most under-used piece of UI in BioEden. It names the region you are looking at and gives its pollution percentage. Two habits worth building:

  1. Check it before you place a dome. Building into a 75% region means committing to a cleanup as well as a

build.

  1. Check it after you place industry. The number moves. Watching it move teaches you the weight of each

building faster than any guide can.

Is pollution the same as Impact Level?

No, and conflating them is the most common misunderstanding. Pollution is local and describes a region's condition. Impact Level is global and describes the Collective's judgement of your stewardship. You can have one clean showcase region and still be heavily regulated because of what you are doing elsewhere. Conversely, cleaning up a single bad region will not on its own clear a Crisis Alert.

The honest summary

BioEden will not kill you, take your save away, or end your run. It will, if you push it, restrict you and tell you off. Treat the pollution percentage and the Impact meter as the two numbers you glance at every few Sols, and you will never see an Active Regulation. Ignore them for fifty Sols while building Orb Factories and you will meet all four at once.

Frequently asked questions

What is Impact Level in BioEden?

A planet-wide measure of how much harm your development is doing. It is separate from regional pollution. When it gets too high the Collective imposes Active Regulations, and higher still triggers a Crisis Alert. One official Collective Request asks the player to reduce Impact Level to 19%.

Can you lose BioEden by polluting too much?

No. There is no game over. You get Active Regulations restricting what you can do, and a Crisis Alert. Both are reversible, but recovering takes time.

How do you reduce pollution in BioEden?

Audit and recycle industry buildings first, purify water and reclaim ruins to restore terrain, spread industry rather than concentrating it, and use guild perks such as Umbra's Terrain Cleaner.

What is the most polluting building in BioEden?

Of the documented buildings, the Orb Factory. Its tooltip shows a +35 pollution effect alongside a 50 power draw and a 1500 + 1000 material cost.

How this BioEden page was verified

BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The gameplay systems described on this page were checked against official BioEden screenshots released by Focus Entertainment, and against the systems described on the official Steam store page. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy.
