Research in BioEden is not one global tech tree. It is the Biome Knowledge Tree, and it levels separately for each of the five biomes. That single design decision shapes how a whole campaign should be played.
How we know it is per-biome
An official screenshot shows a Collective Request reading: *“Raise Knowledge of Prairie to Level 6 in the Biome Knowledge Tree — 5/6”*. Three facts fall out of that one line:
- The system is called the Biome Knowledge Tree.
- Knowledge is tracked per biome, since Prairie has its own level.
- Levels reach at least 6, and Collective Requests can demand a specific biome at a specific level.
What this means strategically
If knowledge were global, spreading across all five biomes would cost you nothing. Because it is per-biome, spreading thin has a real price: five biomes at Knowledge Level 2 cannot satisfy a request that wants one biome at Level 6, and the research that makes a biome comfortable to work in has to be paid for five times over.
The practical consequence for most players is two strong biomes rather than five weak ones. Pick Jungle, because that is where your pre-unlocked species live and where the cheap 3 and 5 DNA unlocks are. Pick one more based on what your planet actually offers — there is no point specialising in Tundra if every Tundra region you have found is a Burnt Tundra sitting at 75% pollution.
Research priority
Without published node lists we will not pretend to give you an exact order, but the priorities that follow from the game's structure are clear enough:
- Anything that unlocks dome capacity or dome-adjacent building options. Being blocked from a second dome by research is one of the four things that stops players, and it is the most annoying of the four because it cannot be solved with materials.
- Climate control quality. Humidifiers and air conditioners are what turn a dome from “an animal can survive here” into “an animal will breed here”. They are also your ongoing water bill, so efficiency improvements compound.
- Species gates. Some Bestiary cards are grey rather than green, meaning they are locked behind something other than DNA. Thudder in the Jungle tab is the documented example. If you want a specific species, the gate is usually research.
- Restoration and cleanup tools. These pay for themselves the moment your Impact Level starts climbing, and they are cheap insurance against Active Regulations.
- Industry. Last, deliberately. Industry raises pollution, and pollution is the one number in BioEden with real consequences.
Guild perks interact with research
Umbra's Speed Reading perk gives a flat +15% research speed at guild level 6, transcribed directly from an official screenshot. On a campaign where you intend to push one biome deep into the Knowledge Tree, that is one of the more valuable perks in the game. On a campaign where you unlock the basics and then mostly build, it is close to irrelevant.
This is the general shape of guild perks in BioEden: they are multipliers on a playstyle rather than new abilities. Choosing a guild well means predicting what you will spend most of your time doing. See all five guilds and which guild to pick.
Knowledge and Collective Requests
Because requests can name a biome and a level, your Knowledge Tree progress determines which requests you can even attempt. A planet with deep Jungle knowledge and nothing else will repeatedly be offered requests it cannot fulfil, and Trust Level accrues slowly as a result.
The counter-move is not to spread evenly. It is to keep one biome deep for the specific requests, and use the breadth you do have for the requests that ask for buildings or stockpiles instead — like “Build 4 Orb Factory” or “Stockpile 15000 Dinitrogen”, both of which are biome-agnostic. See Collective Requests.
Common questions about progression
Does research carry between saves? No. Knowledge is per-campaign, like everything else.
Can you respec? Nothing suggests a respec exists. Treat research spending as permanent and prioritise accordingly.
Is there a level cap? At least 6 is confirmed by the request text. Nothing published confirms the ceiling.
The short version
Go deep in Jungle first. Add exactly one more biome. Prioritise dome capacity, then climate quality, then species gates, then cleanup tools, and leave industry until you actively need it. If you are playing Umbra, lean into research harder than you otherwise would, because +15% compounds across a long campaign.
Frequently asked questions
Is BioEden research global or per biome?
Per biome. The system is called the Biome Knowledge Tree and each biome has its own level, confirmed by an official Collective Request asking the player to raise Knowledge of Prairie to Level 6.
What should I research first in BioEden?
Dome capacity and dome-adjacent unlocks first, then climate control quality, then species gates, then cleanup tools. Leave industry until last because it raises pollution.
Does any guild improve research speed?
Yes. Umbra's Speed Reading perk at guild level 6 gives +15% research speed, transcribed from an official screenshot.
How this BioEden page was verified
BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The gameplay systems described on this page were checked against official BioEden screenshots released by Focus Entertainment, and against the systems described on the official Steam store page. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy. Spot something out of date after a BioEden patch? Send us a correction and we will fix it and log it on the BioEden news page.
