Landowl is the first animal almost every BioEden player will raise, and it is deliberately designed to be forgiving. If you understand Landowl completely, you understand the game's animal systems completely — everything else is the same mechanics with tighter numbers.

Why Landowl is the tutorial species
Look at the numbers. A 25-degree temperature window and a 35-point humidity window are enormous. Most climate setups that are roughly in the right direction will land inside both bands, which means a new player can place a humidifier, not think too hard about it, and still succeed.
That is the design intent: Landowl teaches you the *shape* of the system — check the band, place the plants, push through Biome, Residency and Mating — without punishing imprecision. Later species narrow those windows and the same workflow suddenly requires care.
Setting up a Landowl dome
- Build in a Jungle region. The ambient climate does much of the work for you, which means fewer devices and a lower ongoing water and power bill.
- Place two Ferns. This is a hard requirement, not a suggestion. The Bestiary lists it as Fern ×2 under “Animal and Plant Required”.
- Check temperature and humidity with the overlays. The toggles at the bottom of the dome view show distribution, not just the average.
- Add a watering hole. It contributes to decoration and provides water access, both of which Residency wants.
- Furnish for Residency. Burrows, rocks and additional vegetation. Biome is satisfied by climate; Residency is satisfied by furniture.
- Incubate. Then check the Residency tab, not the Biome tab, when you want to know whether it has settled.
The canopy hint
The flavour text is doing real work: *"Agile creatures whose physiology suggest they spend much time in the canopy."* This is the game telling you Landowl is an arboreal species. Vegetation is not just a checkbox for Landowl — taller plant coverage is thematically what it wants, and furnishing its dome with trees and climbing structures is a reasonable read on how to push it toward Residency and Perfect.
BioEden's flavour text is consistently like this across the Bestiary. Reading it before you spend DNA is a cheap way to predict what a species will need.
Landowl and Perfect status
Landowl's wide bands make it easy to satisfy and *harder* to be precise about, because there is so much room to sit off-centre. The exact criterion BioEden uses for Perfect has not been published, so we will not tell you to target a specific temperature. What is safe to say is method: keep the climate stable rather than letting devices oscillate, use the dome overlays to check distribution instead of trusting the average, and give the species a dome of its own if you are chasing the rating seriously.
The single-species dome argument applies here as much as anywhere. Two species sharing one dome must share one temperature and one humidity, and any rating that rewards precision will be harder to reach for both.
Landowl and Ributs
Both start unlocked in the Jungle tab, both have blue Bestiary headers, and both are therefore free. Ributs' specific requirements do not appear in any official material we have found, so we cannot publish its bands — but the fact that it is pre-unlocked alongside Landowl strongly suggests it is intended as an early, forgiving species too.
Running both in one Jungle dome is the natural opening, provided their bands overlap. If Ributs turns out to be a carnivore, that changes considerably — see carnivores vs herbivores.
Common Landowl problems
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Will not leave the Incubator | Biome requirements not met — check both bands and confirm two Ferns are placed |
| Survives but never becomes a resident | Residency needs decoration, water access and space beyond the Biome checklist |
| Settled but will not breed | Mating needs a second settled individual, stability and no stressors |
| Never reaches Perfect | Climate is inside the band but imprecise or unstable. The exact Perfect criterion is not published |
| Population declining | Something in the dome is eating it |
Frequently asked questions
What temperature does Landowl need in BioEden?
20° to 45°, confirmed on its Bestiary card. That 25-degree window is the widest documented band in BioEden, which is why Landowl is the tutorial species.
What humidity does Landowl need?
55% to 90%, confirmed on its Bestiary card. Keep it stable rather than letting climate devices cut in and out.
What does Landowl eat in BioEden?
Its Bestiary card lists Fern ×2 under “Animal and Plant Required”. Two Ferns must be present in the dome.
Does Landowl cost DNA?
No. Landowl and Ributs both start unlocked with blue Bestiary headers, so you can incubate Landowl before spending any DNA at all.
How this BioEden page was verified
BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The species names, DNA costs and climate values on this page were transcribed directly from an official BioEden Bestiary screenshot; any value not legible in official material is marked as unconfirmed rather than estimated. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy.
