The Carnivore Feeder generates more BioEden searches than any other building, and there are two separate reasons players end up looking for it. This page covers the first — finding and unlocking it. If yours is placed and being ignored, that is a different problem: see feeder not registering.
Why you cannot find it
The problem was reported on the official Steam discussion board during the demo, in a thread titled *"Struggled to find Carnivore Feeder and how to build Second Dome"*. Three things make it hard to locate:
- It is filed under animal care, not food or industry. Players search the production categories first because
"feeder" sounds like a production building. The build menu at the bottom of the dome view is category-based, and the Carnivore Feeder lives with the animal husbandry tools alongside the Incubator and watering hole.
- It is context-dependent. It is a dome-interior building. If you are looking at the outside world view, you
are looking at the wrong build palette entirely.
- It commonly does not appear until it is relevant. Many players only see it once a carnivorous species is
involved — which means players who go looking for it preemptively, before they have any carnivore, find an empty slot and conclude it does not exist.
How to find it, step by step
- Go inside the dome. Not the planet view. The Carnivore Feeder is placed on the dome floor and only appears in the interior build palette.
- Open the animal care category. The build bar at the bottom of the dome view is split into categories. Animal care is where the Incubator and watering hole live, and the feeder is with them — not with production or decoration.
- Scroll the palette. The interior palettes in official screenshots have a scroll arrow at the right end. More than a few players have concluded a building does not exist when it was one page along.
- If it is still absent, check whether you have a carnivore. The feeder is commonly gated behind having a meat-eating species involved. Unlock or incubate one and check again.
- If still absent, check research. The Biome Knowledge Tree gates building options as well as species, and it is tracked per biome, so progress in Jungle may not unlock things in Prairie.
What the Carnivore Feeder is for
BioEden treats diet as an unlisted requirement. A carnivore housed with herbivores will hunt them, no matter how well-tuned the dome is. The Carnivore Feeder is the intended mechanical answer: it supplies meat so the predator has no reason to hunt your population.
That makes it one of the highest-leverage buildings in the game for anyone running mixed domes. Without it, a carnivore is an ongoing tax on everything else in the dome. With it, the same carnivore is just another resident.
Placing it correctly
Finding it is only half the job. A Carnivore Feeder that is present but not working is the most common follow-up complaint, and the causes are consistent:
- Range. The feeder has to be within the area the carnivore actually occupies. A feeder at the far end of a
large dome from a predator that stays in one corner is functionally absent.
- Supply. Like most BioEden buildings it needs to be connected to the networks it consumes. Placement is not
connection. See power and water.
- Type. A herbivore feeder does not satisfy a carnivore. Confirm you placed the right one.
- Timing. Place and supply the feeder *before* introducing the carnivore, not after. Losing three herbivores
while you sort out the feeder is entirely avoidable.
Should you use a feeder or separate domes?
Both work. The trade-off:

If you have the dome capacity, separate. If you do not, the feeder is a genuinely good solution — it just has three ways to be set up wrong, and all three look identical from the outside.
