BioEden is a small, undemanding game — a 3 GB install with a 4 GB VRAM minimum — so most performance problems have a specific cause rather than being "your PC is too slow". Start with the storage requirement, because it is the one most people miss.
Start here: the SSD requirement
BioEden's Steam listing specifies an SSD in both the minimum and the recommended requirements. That is unusual for a 3 GB game and it is easy to skim past.
What happens if you ignore it: the game installs, launches and plays. Then, as your planet fills with domes, animals, networks and active simulation, you get stutter and long loads — and you report it as a performance bug when it is a storage bottleneck.
Check this first. On Steam: right-click BioEden, Properties, Installed Files, Move install folder. A 3 GB move takes moments.
Crash on startup
- Verify game files. Right-click BioEden, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files. This catches most corrupt-download crashes.
- Update your GPU driver. Launch-window crashes are frequently driver-side. Use a clean install option if available.
- Disable overlays. Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, MSI Afterburner and capture software. Test one at a time.
- Run as administrator once. Occasionally resolves first-run permission problems with save directories.
- Check your antivirus. New releases from small studios are sometimes flagged heuristically. Add an exclusion for the BioEden install folder.
- Confirm you meet the minimum. Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB VRAM. 32-bit Windows is not supported at all.
Stutter and low frame rate
Assuming you are on an SSD and above the minimum spec, the usual causes in a simulation-heavy management game are:
- Simulation load, not rendering load. A late-game planet with several fully populated domes, large power and
water networks and many active animals asks more of your CPU and RAM than of your GPU. This is exactly why the recommended spec doubles RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB while VRAM only rises from 4 GB to 6 GB.
- Background applications. With an 8 GB minimum, a browser with thirty tabs open genuinely competes.
- Frame rate cap and V-Sync interaction. If your frame rate is oscillating rather than uniformly low, try
toggling V-Sync or setting a fixed cap.
- Windowed versus fullscreen. Exclusive fullscreen and borderless behave differently on different setups.
Test both.
Reducing load in-game
If your planet has grown large and performance has degraded, the game's own systems give you levers:
- Recycle what you are not using. Every building refunds materials in full, and fewer active buildings means
less to simulate. Idle Orb Factories are the obvious candidates — they also carry a +35 pollution effect, so removing them helps twice. See pollution and Impact Level.
- Consolidate sprawling networks. Long chains of cables and pipes are more objects than a compact grid
carrying the same load. See power and water.
- Do not over-decorate. Decoration matters for Residency, but there is a point of
diminishing returns, and every object is an object.
Save file problems
BioEden supports Steam Cloud on PC. If a save appears to be missing:
- Confirm Steam Cloud is enabled for BioEden in its Properties.
- Check whether you are signed into the same Steam account.
- Remember that demo saves do not carry into the full game — this is expected behaviour, not a lost save.
See the demo guide.
Because BioEden has no fail state and no timer, reloading an earlier save costs you very little compared to most games. If something is genuinely wrong, reloading is a cheap fix.
Reporting performance problems usefully
Post on the official Steam discussion board with your CPU, GPU, RAM, driver version, whether the game is on an SSD, your display mode, and roughly how large your planet is when the problem occurs. That last detail is the one people leave out and the one that matters most for a simulation game — stutter on a fresh save and stutter on a hundred-Sol planet are different problems with different causes.
Frequently asked questions
Does BioEden really need an SSD?
Yes. The Steam listing specifies an SSD in both requirement tiers. The install is only 3 GB, so moving it is quick and resolves many stutter complaints.
Why does BioEden stutter late in a save?
Simulation load. A large planet with several populated domes, big networks and many active animals is CPU and RAM bound rather than GPU bound — which is why the recommended spec doubles RAM but barely raises VRAM.
How do I fix a BioEden crash on startup?
Verify game files on Steam, update your GPU driver, disable overlays one at a time, add an antivirus exclusion for the install folder, and confirm you are on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.
Can I reduce lag in BioEden without upgrading?
Yes. Recycle buildings you are not using — the material refund is full — consolidate sprawling cable and pipe runs, and avoid over-decorating domes past the point Residency requires.
How this BioEden page was verified
BioEden Wiki & Guide is an independent fan resource, not an official one. The the problems documented on this page were reported by real players on the official BioEden Steam discussion board; system behaviour is cross-checked against official screenshots. Where BioEden has not published a value, this page says so instead of guessing, because a wrong number in a BioEden guide costs a reader a dome rather than merely being untidy.
